It was a snug fit, but I managed to pull myself up from the bottom of the lunch box. The office was pitch dark. The lights had been flicked; the doors were shut. Everyone had gone home. I sat at my desk and booted my computer; then I signed in and logged onto the server to punch my digital time stamp. I checked the time: September 11, 2017; 12:01AM.
I had been clocked in for almost two weeks.
I had “worked” through an entire pay cycle. No one had signed me out; no one had messaged me. I checked my email. Nothing–not even a promo. I checked my ticket queue. No new projects.
I wasn’t hungry anymore. I felt content. But I was missing something–
Then my arm reached out and hooked up my coffee cup. It was full, hot, and it smelled like pine in a firepit. I closed my eyes, leaned my head back, and sipped it.
It’s good to be back, I thought. It’s been far too long since I’ve had my morning coffee.
Like what you read? There’s more. In fact, this is the final episode in a four-part arc.
Catch up!
“Morning coffee” is a serial fiction series, served fresh daily. So far, we’ve covered rubberneckers, co-workers, cubicle stains, office plants, desk trophies, conspiracies, secret organizations, pocket dimensions, black holes, and impending, inevitable doom. And that’s just the beginning.
Where should we go next? Let me know in the comment section below.
Stay weird,
-Jake
I like this one—it’s one of your funniest so far, in my view. Short, direct, and to the point. Papa would be proud.

Thanks! I want shooting for funny, necessarily, but given the context, it’s pretty absurd. I figure it’s the only way I could end the arc and stay true to the world.

I just finished all four parts – I really enjoyed the story and your writing! It feels so much like a metaphor for everyday life. This perpetual sinking/running away from what we truly want as we convince ourselves we’re making progress while
Actually doing nothing. Either that, or I have not drank enough coffee today. Thank you for giving me a great morning read!

Thanks. I’ve been really up in the air over this arc. It’s a little different from some of the other entries in the series. I really appreciate the feedback. I’ll have another entry fire you today.
