morning coffee // There’s Something in the Water

I can’t drink from the water cooler anymore. There’s something in it.

Every few hours, I take a break from work and fill up at the water cooler. The short trip gives me a chance to stretch my legs, clear my head, and refocus on work. This morning, I noticed something floating in it: a small, black speck swimming in the ether.

I flicked the plastic, and the speck sunk to the bottom. I bled some water into a paper cup, and the speck floated back to the top. I emptied the cup into a nearby bin.

I flicked; it settled.

I bled; it floated back to the top.

I repeated this until I had emptied all of the water into the bin. The speck’s still there, clinging to the wall.

Now I’m thirsty, and the only clean water is in the trash.

Back to work, I guess.

Like what you read? There’s more.

“Morning coffee” is a serial fiction series, served fresh daily. So far, we’ve covered rubberneckers, co-workers, cubicle stains, office plants, desk trophies, conspiracies, secret organizations, pocket dimensions, black holes, and impending, inevitable doom. And that’s just the beginning.

Where should we go next? Let me know in the comment section below.

Stay weird,
